Islamic People in Exile

Islamic People in Exile
The international world is watching as Israel invades Gaza to attack the Islamic Terrorist group called Hamas. What you do not know, what you do not see is my two Islamic friends. One lives in Qatar an exile or refugee from Iraq. I met a new Islamic friend here in Guatemala an exile from Lebanon.

Neither of these men or their families can ever return to their home, never, ever, it is over, their lives are in danger. They cannot worship in peace, it is not possible for them to speak honestly. To say their names or show a photo is dangerous, they could be killed.

I am worried even to give details, however a friend I met in Iraq had his family and life threatened. He fled to Qatar and will never return, he will not talk about it, he will not be interviewed, and he will not write about it, his voice is stopped. The Islamic Terrorist in Iraq will reach out and kill him.

My new friend here in Guatemala left after his uncle was killed, and then he was kicked out of Mosque in Germany because he does not support Terrorist. He is now living as an Islamic person in Guatemala alone, a refugee from his religion.

It is quite amazing to listen to him speak about Israel, he is screaming at the television for Israel to attack. He wants them to invade Lebanon to attack Hezbollah.

An Iraq man who can never go home…
A Lebanon man who can never go home…

He said,
“They are the dark side.”

You will never hear a balanced opinion about Islamic Terrorist, anyone who speaks against them anywhere on the earth is in danger including me.

These Islamic Terrorist groups have hijacked a religion, they are evil, they are the dark side, and they need destroyed. They have great support, if you do not, they will try to kill you.

If I know two people, there are millions… to speak, to talk, to be honest means they must leave their religion. Neither person has abandoned their religion, however there is no freedom of religion for them.

You will never hear the truth on this issue, as on famous man said,

A LIE
“If you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.”

Guatemala Boy with Heavy Load

Guatemala Boy with Heavy Load
The Mayan people are more than willing to do work, the photos below shows a small boy doing a mans size job. I do not feel sorry for this boy in the least, I feel proud, it is a good day in my life when I see a boy doing a job that needs done.

The boy needs to first pick up a bundle and place it on the top.

He turns around, puts his back up against the bag, grabs it behind his head, and then shifts the weight forward to change the balance.

Then he quickly scoots into the building, unloads and returns with no hesitation.

This reminds me of going to the farm bureau at age 16-17 to get a load of cattle feed. The first time I tried to move a bag, I said to myself, “this is impossible.” However, with any good work, we accommodate the job, we learn the task, and I became a man.

I have placed a Paypal.com donation button back on this Travel Journal, it is now in the left column of the actual blog, you cannot see it in RSS readers.

I have learned that people click on ads to try to help me, this is not acceptable. It is not ethical to click on advertisements unless you are interested. If you wish to help me, pay the money yourself, do not hurt another company or person.

Before you get on the bus, before any representative from the bus approaches you need to know the cost. If you do not ask before, about 10-20 percent of the time you will be overcharged.

Ask any person that is riding the bus, or minivan, the art of negotiation is best done when you already know the cost already. To guarantee there is no problem, pay with the exact change.

Guatemala Homemade Incense

Guatemala Homemade Incense
Guatemala Culture

I came upon an older woman in the Market the other day, she did not fit it, she looked ancient, like I was somehow looking at Guatemala 50 years ago. I saw her face, eyes, clothing and my instincts took over and I needed to identify the dissonance in my mind, why did I feel different when I looked at her.

The way she was sitting on the ground was different.

The scarf on her head was different.

She was dark skinned; she does not avoid the sun, as do many of the modern Mayan or Mestizo people of modern Guatemala.

She was selling a product I have never encountered in the market, it was Tuesday, market day in Solola, this market has almost nothing to go with Gringos.

Look are her eyes, she is weighing the incense.

The women did not speak Spanish, however was extremely smart, with sign language she indicates her product was used in for praying. I ante up five quetzals for what I remember as one have pound of this homemade incense.

Her eyes are taking into consideration, yes the weight is correct, is this just, is the weighing process ok.

She offers it up for my inspection with full respect of me, no mockery, no Gringo look, complete respect. I stopped to take a few photos of here while she was looking me in the eye. I feel sure she knows I am purchasing the incense in exchange for the photos. She is ok with this, she helps to make my photos good, she gets an assist and continues with the business of the day.

This is the homemade incense; it has small pieces of branch or word inside this concoction. There was also a red colored type of incense to choose from, it was very difficult to learn about this item. When I returned to the Hotel I asked the owner what it was, he said,
“Yo no se.”

I do not know.

I did this a blind test; I had already asked a man who as working in the sales space next to the woman what it was. He wrote this word down, “estoraca.” I ask about the red material and he wrote “arbol,” I know this word is Tree.

Specific use of words is not common in the majority of cultures on the planet, I must push for clarification, there is continually minimizing information, to go into detail is not common.

I do am not able to find the word “estoraca,” however it may also be spelled “estoracy.” This spelling is not Spanish, so hard to believe that is the correct spelling.

I have great joy in meeting and getting to know older people in other countries, the respect given by older people greases the wheels of understanding when one attempts to truly understand another culture and not just photograph it.

Jury Duty in Angola Indiana

Jury Duty in Angola Indiana
I have been called to Jury Duty in Angola, Indiana. I happened to get the questionnaire when I was home for 10 days over Christmas. I was diligent, respectful and answered the questions as honestly as possible. Today my parents received a notice to appear for something or be in contempt of court.

They are good citizens, went over to the courthouse and filed something saying I was in Guatemala, now in my opinion…

I am happy to come serve on Jury Duty; however, I would appreciate a round trip ticket to Detroit or Chicago please.

Trust me after four driving under the influences, I have a sincere respect for the legal system, because "I fault the law and the law won."

I am happy to be sober over 20 years, maybe 21, maybe 22, I am not sure actually, however on February 12 it will be another year.

Guatemala Real Estate

I came upon a home built in Solola, Guatemala a small city just up the hill from Panajachel, Guatemala on Lago, Atitlan. The economic of Real Estate around Lago Atitlan are twisted to say the least; there is no rhyme or reason. My friend Gary believes it because of what he calls an imperfect market, personally as person who was a Real Estate Broker for 14 years I consider it more like a case of mass hysteria where all sense of intelligence has disappeared.

There are homes on this lake selling from over 270,000 US Dollars, and I was offered a one acre lot for 400,000 US Dollars.

Thinks about it, there is a Habitat for Humanity home here on one of the best views on the lake right next to a few onion fields.

Here is a photo of the plaque that was above the doorway.

I wonder if the family would take 10-20,000 for the home, hehehe they by far have one the best lots on this lake. This is a good location for transportation, shopping, a hospital is up the street, and some grocery store owned by Walmart. If I ever seen a good location for a home, this is one of the better.

WARNING - Renting a car is very dangerous in most countries on the planet.

WARNING - Renting a car is very dangerous in most countries on the planet.

The new economic of travel that has evolve is this, when you have a group from 2-4 people you can use the collective money and get a private driver.

EXAMPLE:

The cost of a round trip ticket to Flores to visit Tikal from Guatemala City is about 200 US. Dollars, the cost of a bus is about 80 US dollars.

Three people times 200 dollars is 600 dollars

Three people times 80 is 240 dollars.

The cost of a private driver, which includes gas, lodging, food and all expenses, is from 850 to 1000 Quetzals per day.

109 - 129 U.S. Dollars per day for a private car with driver.

Do the math; you can have a private driver for a few days.

Pros

1. You can make multiple stops.
2. Stop for photos
3. Choose the paths
4. Air Conditioned Vehicles
5. Old or problems people can stop often for the toilets.
6. You do not have to associate with the locals.

Cons

1. You do not meet the locals as easily.
2. If you negotiate the trip badly the driver can take advantage of you.
3. The chances of getting rob increases.
4. You need to be on a round-trip, say from Antigua and back to Antigua, although the driver can make the trip back home alone.

Advice

1. Do not talk with the just the drivers, you must get a recommendation from a trusted hotel owner or maybe a tourist restaurant owner, transportation company advice can be dangerous.

2. Make sure you inspect the car, SUV or Van, make sure the plates are normal license plates, no rental car, or special plates that would draw attention.

3. See the vehicle before you make the deal

4. Meet the driver before you make the deal.

5. You want a vehicle that does not have any writing on the side, no tourism vehicles; you want to blend in with the other cars.

6. Wear a cap to cover up brazenly blond hair, or other ways of knowing you are not a local.

7. Do not tell owners when you are leaving the hotel, do not telegraph your plans.

9. Stop traveling daily before 3-4, better to wake at 5:00 and stop at noon, this is the safest method of travel.

10. The driver should never pick up any friends for any reason, there is no reason a friend of the driver should be in the car.

11. Best to meet and know the family of the driver, best if he is married and has children.

WARNING - Renting a car is very dangerous in most countries on the planet.
